“Uniquely Midwest”

Traversing parts of the country you don’t normally frequent means you get to see, learn and experience.

Trust me, today was a real experience. If you like, just insert yesterday’s grey clouds here, because they’re all we saw today. Of course, if you looked up to see them, your eyes would have filled with water since it rained all day! Another day of this, and it’ll be just like the end of the 2003 Power Tour.

At the driver’s meeting, Doc was kind enough to remind everyone the rain didn’t start until my coverage did. He also gave everyone my cell phone number and suggested they call if they didn’t like the weather.

It could have been worse, though — he could have given out my hotel room number.

Doc promised to correct that oversight at the next meeting.

Driving the back way from the Quad Cities to the Chicago suburbs means taking the road less traveled.

We blasted down the interstate until, you guessed it,

another Power Tour traffic jam. And, big surprise, a lane was closed.

It seems to be a habit of ours.

The folks from “Rides” took the opportunity to film a collection of cool cars entering the highway. Of course, our ’59 Sedan Delivery was there, followed by the Edelbrock’s ’32 Ford. Show fans might recognize the Roy Brizio-built street rod from the Topless episode.

Everything was fine until some guy in a big Suburban passed us on the shoulder and cut in front of us.

He must have been in a hurry looking for those ducks that Ken was talking about on Monday’s coverage.

If you see him, let ’em know I’m still waiting for an apology.

I pity the folks who stick to the interstates — they miss all the interesting opportunities. Stuff like a pink and purple house,

the world’s largest chicken,

and the chance to get a tattoo and piercing while having an espresso.

Meet the fine folks of Clinton, Iowa. It must be a microcosm of populace, since presidential candidates always stop there to campaign. From what we’ve seen, all of Clinton stopped working to check out the Tour as it cruised through their town.

It doesn’t take much to amuse some.

I really hadn’t worried too much about the weather until we ran across this Amphicar.

It made me wonder just how much more rain was coming. These great little cars, which had the unique ability to perform poorly at being both a car and a boat, were built in Germany.

The attention to detail was evident, though. Check out the hood ornament.

It was good to see the owner used common sense when motoring in the wet.

Propulsion on land was via rear drive. On the water, though, it was a different manner:

Finally, after twisting, turning and cursing the slow moving locals, we arrived in Arlington, and the home of the Arlington Million horse race. With an eye to the sky, we continued to scour the lot for rides of notable interest. Some were classics, like this Shelby GT350.

Or this ’67 Chevy II Nova.

Mopar’s answer to the square Chevy II was the equally square ’66 and ’67 Belvedere II. It’s my favorite Mopar street body style.

I’d kill for one with a hemi.

Here’s a real nice Malibu. This owner is proud to have his Power Tour 2003 sticker on the quarter window as well. The Tour keeps getting bigger with newbies, but there’s a lot of veterans, too.

You see a lot of works-in-progress on the Tour. Here’s a later model S-10 Blazer with a Bel Air front.

While manufacturers today market to specific demographics, I found out Chrysler was the first to do so in 1955, with a car geared specifically towards women. This is a Dodge La Femme — the only one I’ve ever seen. Note the color scheme for women, and those killer tail lights out back.

The rain did give a different look to automotive art. This Trans Am’s shaker was beading,

while this E-body Mopar’s flip-flop paint was shimmering.

If you look close, you’ll see it has 2 extra cylinders, courtesy of a Dodge Viper drivetrain.

Tourers were seeking shelter from the rain, like this owner of a red ’58 Chevy.

The Marine Corps was in good form with their pull up challenge. Folks between the ages of 18 and 30 had the chance to show they had the right stuff.

I would have shown them all how to do it, but I missed the age cut by just a few years.

With no sign of let-up from the rain, we packed up and headed for our hotel, hoping for a good night’s sleep and a chance to recharge our mental batteries. Tomorrow we head for Lambeau Field in Green Bay. The secret, inside word is less rain, but lower temperatures. Some guy I know only packed T-shirts and shorts, figuring June was safe for summer wear.

I think he figured wrong. I’ll, I mean he’ll, find out tomorrow. I hope you’ll stop back and check in.
