  “Rising Up and Falling Down”

Rising early isn’t easy when you don’t get to bed before 2:00 AM. Only a couple more days, I can make it.

Our driver’s meeting was at one of my wife’s favorite shopping places — Wal-Mart. Even if you don’t like their store, they have enough room for a thousand or so cars in their lot.

I saw my friend Mikael from Finland stumbling around. Here’s a picture of the car he bought when he flew into Los Angeles.

I also found a late-model Camaro with flip-flop paint. Under the hood, he must have given-up on the idea of “Packing a Paxton,” and instead packed two of them.

How’s that for suitable horsepower? Nice paint, too.

I also ran across the old Chrysler 300 we saw yesterday. According to the owner, it’s a ’55, and was the first 300 model, so there’s no alpha designation like in later years. It also was the last year for 6-volt systems. Nice motor, huh?

300s were the original luxury tourer. Today’s 300M can trace its heritage back to this car.

Every year, it seems like someone gets married on the Tour. These brave souls bought a Chevelle wagon and shoved-off, planning to live it up as they start their life together.

Best o’ luck to them.

Right near the honeymooners was a cool mini-van.

Note those great-looking flames.

The Mopar club had a club photo shoot just before we got there. I found a cool horn

to match the decals I saw.

All too soon the Tour bugged-out, leaving us and a couple of cars behind for photo shoots. It looks like they prefer to do live action shots.

They filmed us, and then we raced to join the Tour, now somewhere in Ohio.

After getting rained-on a couple of times, we finally arrived in beautiful downtown Pontiac. I spent my time looking for more info on a few cars I had seen on the road like this ’41 Cadillac 62 Series. It has a 32-valve Northstar engine running north and south, and pushes a C4 Corvette independent rear suspension.

There’s even a handmade stainless grille. The owner built it himself.

It only took twenty months to build. Oh, don’t forget, it gets 19+ miles per gallon at 75 miles per hour. I’m so jealous.

Around the corner were other great rides like a ’65 Mustang 2+2 at the Ford display,

and a ’65 Hemi Belvedere down Mopar way. You gotta love a motor like this don’t you?

Wasn’t there a Beach Boy’s song about a “Brand-new, shiny-red superstock Dodge?” Well, this one’s green but the rest of the story is right.

Remember that Michigan-based Caprice Sport Coupe with the killer motor, and nothing (and I do mean nothing) in the way of getting down the road? I think folks are using it for a rolling billboard to their “rolling art.”

I hope they make it. Meanwhile, back at the trailer, Jim and Gary dispensed copious amounts of information, and sold a few things, too.

All too soon we packed it in and headed out. Since I can’t read the words I’ve just written, I guess I need a little sleep tonight to prepare for our final drive from Pontiac to Youngstown.

The last driving day, and more fun to follow. I hope you’ll come back tomorrow and read of our escapades covering the drive to Youngstown, and the Power Festival brought to you by Hot Rod.

It’ll be fun, I promise.
