“Just Playin’ Opossum”
Things aren’t always as they seem. We found that out several times today.
Take the rig crew, for instance I thought they were all car guys and rooted on land. Come to find out, after we left the Detroit venue last night, they packed-up the rig and went out on the lake.
Friend Bruce Kimmons has this little boat. A Scarab, I think they called it. Somebody mentioned it goes about as fast as Bruce’s 1,000-plus horsepower Camaro. Here’s a pic of the guys before Bruce scared them silly on the water.
Bruce is the one with the evil grin on his face, holding the wheel. Somehow I’ll bet they weren’t smiling after their little jaunt, if Bruce drives that boat like he does the Camaro
This morning we packed-up and headed south, for Dayton. Nice bumper sticker on this pick up, eh?

In no time, we were in beautiful Toledo. Traffic, however, refused to cooperate. This Tourer rested a little on the side of the road before continuing.

In no time at all, he was back on his way.
South of Dayton we left the interstate for the back roads. While running through Arlington, we came upon Marky Mo’s my kinda place.

Everything on the menu looked good.

It was healthy, too. Back on the road, we passed farm land, flora and fauna until we came upon a reminder of my youth the drive-in theatre.

Neisan hadn’t ever seen one before. Kids these days. Neisan is new to our team, but you may have seen him on the Speed TV show Supercars Exposed doing product demos.
Just like Marky Mo’s was a great place for a burger, you know a place like this is the place to be on a Friday night. I love the creative name.

Ah, the stories that gravel parking lot could tell.
Whilst blasting down the back roads at the speed limit, we saw David Frieberg, Publisher of Hot Rod, waving us down . Thinking his car broke, we stopped to help out. Come to find out, they just needed another cool car to add to the assortment in front of this small airport.

That’s me second from the left. Look for us in the Power Tour issue of Hot Rod this fall.
Not ten minutes later we found our title for the day “Just Playin’ Opossum.”

This critter’s ability to lay there playin’ opossum while cars drove by, mere inches away, shows he has nerves of steel. Neisan wanted to take him home for a pet, but I reminded him there was a limit of 2 carry-ons on the plane.
In no time we arrived at today’s stop, the University of Dayton. They’re a formidable foe in the Atlantic 10 Basketball Conference.

As usual, the Tour grows larger the closer we get to the end. There were a few new cars we hadn’t seen before like this.

I’m not sure what it is, but it sure does look like fun.
If you’ve noticed in our big rig shots, there have been some late model cars around wearing Lingenfelter logos. This new Camaro is another example of their work,

along with their ZR1 like I’m driving.

A real interesting car is this clean 1969 Camaro, which has the ZR1 running gear stuffed under it, front to back.

Oh, if it were just red!
Out in the lot we found all manner of interesting rides. A clean shoe box,

a smooth ’30s rod.

Another vintage looking pick-up

that has earned its keep, and a real Gurney Eagle small block Ford engine.

That’s the world’s most useful tool, duct tape, covering the Webers while sitting still.
This Charger purports to be the engineering test predecessor of the Mopar winged wonders.

Don’t ask me, but it sure is well done.
If Mark ever tires of his W-30 442, maybe this guy will swap his gold for Mark’s red.

With all the rain we’ve run through, everyone needed to spend a few minutes cleaning up.

Showtime to the rescue!
Remember the ’64 Impala from a few days ago that folks were signing? It’s catching on.

Even Neisan got into the act.

When the showers returned, some folks jumped into their cars. Others braved the elements.

I’m guessing this test vehicle was testing for bad gas.

I don’t know about two states, but I’ll stay upwind, thank you.
Speaking of staying upwind, I doubt anyone tried to steal these folks’ space.

Yesterday we showed you the wedge motor from that Dodge wagon, but failed to show you the wagon. Here it is.

Speaking of motors, a clean motor is a happy motor.

This motor isn’t too happy.

Hey Clark Griswald, we found your car!

It would have been easier to find, had it been orange like this.

Driving the ZR1, I’ve become more aware of just how many Corvettes there are on the Tour. What I can’t figure out is why they arrived so late.

They must drive slower than the rest of us.
Remember when Suburbans weren’t 4-wheel drive monstrosities?

While this is a nice big block ’Vette, I think I’ll keep driving the ZR1.

How about the smallest ’57 around?

Kinda tough for a date, though.
Details always make the car. Check out this firewall.

Back in South Bend we were in the home of Studebaker. Here’s a supercharged R2 motor.

Would you believe it was in a wagon?

I guess wagons really can haul.
On our drive down we kept seeing this motor home,

pulling this trailer,

with this in it.

I really, really, really, want a ride. Or a drive. Too bad the weather didn’t cooperate enough for them to put some miles on it.
Speaking of weather, tomorrow sounds really crummy. Storms, rain and maybe hail. If I were a wimp I’d hide here in the hotel all day, but I’m not so I won’t.
I’m heading for Somerset, Kentucky, and I hope you’ll come along for the ride.
Your humble and obedient servant,
Forrest Tosie
