Power Tour 2007
Monday, May 17
Amarillo, TX to Admiral Twin Drive-In, Tulsa, OK

“Lone Star Fever”

9:00 am. Adios Amarillo.

Up ahead, Scott Killeen throws open the back door s of the Hot Rod Power Tour support van and starts shooting pictures.

Gary, annoyed by the whole spectacle, says, “look at those idiots jockeying to get their pictures in the magazine.” He then mockingly adds, “Hey everybody look at me! I’m going to be on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine!!!“

How ironic. This from a guy who, after showing up on the cover of July’s Super Chevy magazine, asks me to get him an extra two dozen copies. Can’t you just picture him handing out Super Chevy magazines to all his friends?

“Hey everybody look at me! I’m on the cover of Super Chevy magazine!!!“

Cripes. . .

One of the many custom Power Tour plates we’ve seen on the road.

The world’s largest cross appears on the horizon, just outside of Britten.

As we get nearer, it becomes apparent that this is a really, REALLY BIG CROSS. To give you an idea of its size, there are three cars parked at its base. In the far background, high voltage utility lines run across the horizon.

Yes, Britten takes pride in being different.

The official “Welcome to Oklahoma” pace car.

In case you didn’t know, Oklahoma is tornado country.

Just off of the Turner Turnpike we see remnants of an Outlet Mall that was recently destroyed by a tornado.

Tulsa, Oklahoma.

Tonight’s stop is at an authentic 50’s drive-in movie theater.

We catch up with Hot Rod Magazine Publisher, Brad Gerber, using Mothers® Showtime® Instant Detailer on his Summit Mustang. Sadly, Brad has a lot to learn about cleaning cars. You never, EVER drag the towel on the ground. Why? Because lose dirt and gravel get caught up in the cloth, increasing your chances of scratching the paint.

Hunter Picard/Dunn, future hot rod enthusiast.

A 1958 Chevrolet Yeoman Wagon.

1970 Plymouth Road Runner Super Bird.

1970 GTO Judge.

1970 Buick GSX.

Tonight’s movies: “America Graffiti &# and “Rebel Without a Cause.“

If your interested, I’ve got one more shot of the Tulsa Drive-in stop left.

It’s panoramic, so you’ll need to click here (use your horizontal scroll bar to view the entire image):

Tulsa Drive-In Cruise Night Panorama

Tomorrow we leave the Interstate behind and travel the back roads of Oklahoma and Kansas.
