Power Tour 2007
Saturday, May 9
Mesquite, NV to Grand Junction, CO

We leave Mesquite, Nevada with a heavy heart. . .  and a hearty breakfast of beef jerky & cappuccino.

The grade into Virgin Gorge, Utah.

On the other side of the gorge, the scenery is breath-taking.

A metallic purple 1933 Willys and a deep red Henry J.

From here we turn east on I-70 to Denver.

Richfield, Utah. From left to right, Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour announcer, “Top Hat” John. The guys from MSD Ignition, Tod Ryden and Ed Monte. A very important person with Petersen Publishing who’s name escapes me (we’ll just call him “No Top Hat” Tom). And our long time friend — Sales Manager for Petersen Events — Catherine Girard-Cobb.

On the road just outside of Richfield.

Troy Trepanier’s legendary Sniper (see last year’s story, May 16) followed by Trepanier’s Bisquik.

Where the streets have no names (if there were any streets).

Grand Junction, Colorado. This time we made it without breaking down. We were hard pressed to find the original place where the Nova died last year. Finally, after many long, painful seconds of looking, we abandon our search. We can only hope that our crude rock and wood memorial — fashioned in the shape of a stripped distributor gear — still stands, lost and alone, a sentinel against the gray Utah sky.

Here’s a car you don’t see every day. A fully restored 1973 Javelin.

Our Mothers® mechanic, Gary Turnau (pictured in T-shirt and cap) descends from upon Hot Rod High to speak to his to devoted minions. A hush falls on t he crowd as they worship at the altar of his Olds 442.

One of the hottest hot rods to have in your garage is a 1969 Pontiac GTO Judge. This one is owned by David Graham. License Plate: POWER2R.

9:00 pm. Arrive at Hotel. As it turns out, our travel agent’s computer forgot to tell the hotel’s computer that our reservations were guaranteed on the company card. Our rooms are long gone. The only available lodging is 45 miles east in a town called Parachute. Time to hit the road. See you in the morning.

Next stop, Denver, Colorado.
