Power Tour 2007
Friday, May 8
Pomona, CA to Fairplex, Mesquite, NV

7:00 am. The dawn of a new day. Outside, Pomona awaits. Could you ask for anything more?

It seems like every Power Tour has at least one Rust-O-Rod.

427 Cobra kit car with a custom ”Power Tour Cam strapped onboard.

There’s a lot of Chevy Bel Airs on this trip. Here’s two 1957 models.

Speaking of Bel Airs, here’s Hot Rod Magazine Publisher Jim “Are You Sure You Don’t Have Any More Money? Savas’ latest project car.

The Hot Rod Magazine “Motel 6 sponsored bus. It has its own bathroom- for those senior editors who simply can’t make it from one rest stop to the next.

The crowds gather for the first of many driver’s meetings. Mr. Savas covers all the important driving rules. He also confides to the drivers that if anyone cuts him off, he’ll “hunt them down and beat them like dogs. He also points out that they should stay out of his way or he will mow them over like they were standing still. The meeting ends with a heart-felt group hug, then we’re off.

Barstow. The biggest little traffic jam west of Blythe. Up ahead the highway splits. To the left, Las Vegas. To the right, Bakersfield. Strange, no one seems to want to go to Bakersfield. Go figure. . .

Next stop Baker, California. Home of The Original Bun Boy and The World’s Tallest Thermometer. I’m sure there’s a joke in there somewhere, but I’m not going to tell it.

It’s Zzyzx. We must be getting close to Nevada.

It wouldn’t be a Power Tour if we didn’t have some kind of car problem. If you read last year’s story, you’ll remember that our 1963 Nova broke down in the middle of the Utah desert.

It was a special moment for us. Stranded on the side of the road, hundreds of our fellow Power Tour participants driving by — each showing their support with the ever popular Honk of Shame. We learned an important lesson that day. Breaking down is BAD. Breaking down in the middle of nowhere is VERY BAD. Breaking down in front of hundreds of fellow hot rodders is VERY, VERY BAD. Having Hot Rod Magazine write about your break down in their publication is VERY, VERY, VERY BAD. On the plus side, they did mention that we had our Nova up and running in only a few hours. But still, it’s not the kind of thing you want to repeat.

So guess what happened?

Actually it wasn’t that horrible, just a little precautionary maintenance. It turns out we had two marginal U-Joints and an out-of-balance driveshaft. Thankfully we found a great shop — Adam’s Driveshaft — just south of Vegas in Henderson, Nevada. They had us back on the road in about an hour and a half (not bad for a Friday afternoon at 3:00 pm).

While we waited for our driveshaft to be rebalanced, we strolled over to a local casino for something to eat. In the casino’s restaurant, we met Barry. On the younger side of 50, Barry has lived and worked in Henderson for a little over two years. Originally from Atlantic City, he has a unique outlook on life. People in my family die young says Barry. It makes no difference to me. Personally, I could die right now and not give a damn.

Life in Henderson is good for Barry.

4:45 pm. We scream past Vegas and head north to the Oasis Resort in Mesquite, Nevada.

6:00 pm. We arrive at the Oasis Casino.

1967 Chevy Nova II with dual four-barrel Holleys.

License plate: 1BADII.

A 1948 silver Cadillac.

A 1951 Dodge with white flames, yellow body.

The Oasis turns out to be a nice change from Vegas. Outside, the night is warm and dry. The band plays in the distance as the sound of hot rod thunder fills the air.

It just doesn’t get any better than this. . .

Next stop, Grand Junction, Colorado.
