11:00 am. From this point on our daily drives get shorter. Today’s cruise from St. Louis to Springfield is a mere 99 miles. Great! No more early morning driver’s meetings.

2:00 pm. We pull into the Rock n’ Roll Hardees in Springfield, Illinois. At the foot of the show stage is this 1969 Pontiac GTO. “The Judge” has ram air, 5 speed and nitrous.

Also on display was the Hot Rod Magazine van we “borrowed” to rescue the Nova outside Grand Junction, Colorado. Note to Chevy engineers — a couple of anonymous Power Tour members would like to report that the cornering in this van becomes slightly less responsive (though still extremely manageable) at speeds in excess of 95 miles per hour.

7:30 pm. Early evening means it’s time for the unofficial burnout competition along Stevenson Drive.

As the smoke settle in the west, we say good-bye to another Power Tour party. Even now, as I work late into the night, I can still hear the soothing lullaby of tires squealing in the distance. Sweet dreams Springfield.
