Power Tour 2007
Saturday, May 10
Las Vegas, NV to The Hilton, Grand Junction, CO

5:30 am. A late evening at the Las Vegas Speedway followed by major problems checking into our hotel (a two hour wait to register) add up to another late night Internet jamboree. Final bed-down time, 2:30 am. Add to that a 6:00 am early start and life becomes somewhat difficult, if not downright painful.

We happily leave Las Vegas in the dust and climb north on Route 15. Directly behind us is the BOYDAIR cruiser and the Hot Rod Magazine Power Tour van.

A little further north, a narrow gorge provides some of the best photo opportunities yet.

The Power Tour’s first glimpse of Utah’s snow covered peaks.

Local residents in the small town of Beaver, Utah turn a Power Tour gas stop into an impromptu Hot Rod party.

Dedicated, tireless and stark raving mad. The Hot Rod Television video crew spent most of their time precariously balanced just inside the open rear door of a speeding van.

Chevrolet’s new marketing campaign, “Bugs Love Vettes”, should be a big hit among the generation X’ers.

We leave Route 15 and turn on to Route 70. The sweeping vistas are incredible.

4:00 pm. Major, MAJOR car trouble. . .  about 45 miles from Grand Junction our ’63 Nova suddenly stops. A closer examination reveals that there’s no spark from the coil. I can see another late night in my future.

There’s nothing quite so gratifying as having your car break down. Luckily, our little clown friend was there to raise our spirits with his irrepressible, devil-may-care demeanor.

Since Mr. Mechanic, Gary Turnau, was already scheduled to fly into Grand Junction and take over for Dennis, we came up with a plan. We decided that I would hitch a ride into town, pick up Gary (along with some spare ignition parts) and head back to the car. So I grabbed the first available ride for Grand Junction. Once there I borrowed Hot Rod Magazine’s van, grabbed a few quick pictures, picked-up Gary and headed back out.

6:00 pm. Gary and I race back to Dennis and the Nova. When we get there, all we find is dust and chaparral. It appears one of the follow-up crews (Ford Motorsport) has loaded the car on their trailer and hauled it on to Grand Junction. We turn around and floor it back to town.

7:30 pm. We locate Dennis and drop him off at the airport. Gary digs into the Nova’s engine, and within minutes he finds the problem. The brass teeth on the distributor gear have sheared off.

8:00 pm. Gary gets a replacement gear from the guys at the MSD Ignition booth. Within half an hour he has the Nova running like new.

11:00 pm. After a well earned steak dinner I finally retire to my motel room to begin working on today’s Power Tour Internet update. I’m so very, very, tired.

3:30 am. The day’s events are all composed — ready to rock and roll (or more accurately, upload). Time to catch a quick hour or two of sleep.

Tomorrow: The Power Tour Crosses the Rockies. The big question — will the Nova make it past last year’s troublesome spot?
